Coping with Iliotibial Ban Syndrome Symptoms

Long-term ITBS can be a devastating problem for active runners and other athletes who are uncertain about their treatment options. All too often, these active individuals either live with their conditions by trying to ‘fight through the pain’ or they give up the activities they love. Fortunately, there is another option for anyone suffering from chronic iliotibial band syndrome: treating the condition and its symptoms, to reduce pain, restore knee function, and regain their active lifestyles.

IT Band Syndrome Treatment Priorities

IT band syndrome is a condition in which the connective tissue running from the hip to the knee becomes inflamed, causing pain in the outer part of the kneecap and disruption of the IT band’s core functions. In many instances, the condition resolves itself with rest, elevation of the knee, and the use of ice packs. Persistent or recurring inflammation, however, usually requires a more formalized treatment plan. That plan should focus on three main priorities:

Reducing Inflammation and Pain.

IT band injuries can be extremely painful, with inflammation that can substantially impact mobility and range of motion in the knee. Treating those symptoms is a top priority and is usually achieved through the use of compression bandages, ice, rest, and other traditional pain relief methods. These symptom mitigation techniques are just part of the overall treatment process.

Stretching and Tissue Manipulation

To treat the root causes of IT band issues and promote recovery, any treatment plan should also focus on IT band syndrome stretches, as well as manual manipulation of tissue. Regular osteopathic manipulation stretching exercises can help to loosen tight tissue in the IT band and restore those tissues to a healthier, more relaxed state.

Exercises to Strengthen Key Muscles in the Leg

Since weakness in the glutes, hamstrings, thighs, and core can create imbalances that overload the IT band, the third major component of treatment should include strengthening exercises. By strengthening these areas, you can reduce the load on your IT band, and minimize the potential for recurring injuries. Your osteopath can recommend effective exercises to address these strength concerns.

The Role of Osteopathic Care

Osteopathic treatment can include manual manipulation of tissue, stretching and exercising regimens, posture corrections, and lifestyle recommendations that can facilitate recovery from injury and prevent future occurrences. In fact, osteopathic techniques are ideal for addressing long-term ITBS concerns and other types of runner’s knee.

Dr. Tafler took me in for a weekend to receive manipulation under anesthesia. Two weeks later I was able to walk without pain. I have been pain free since that moment until today, many years after initial treatment. Without his treatment I do not know if I would have been able to walk at all.

Two weeks ago I came to his office. He is a very nice and very pleasant man. I told him about a terrible pain in my back. He gave me two injections and I was able to walk a lot better. I felt myself at my twenties. When I went for the second treatment under anesthesia, I was running up the stairs at my church. All my friends got very happy for me. So, I believe, this man is a hero! If not him, I would not be able to walk!
